Finding Solace and Strength in Sports During Challenging Times
We’ve all experienced those moments when life’s challenges seem insurmountable. The initial excitement of the new year fades, and suddenly, even the most beloved activities, like running, can feel like a chore. But amidst these challenges, there’s a powerful tool at our disposal: our sports.
I recently shared a video on Instagram of myself sliding down a super tube, and I was astonished to see it garner so many views. I’d like to believe it was partly due to the caption that accompanied it:
“For this week’s newsletter I wanted to write about resilience and leaning into sports when it feels like your world is falling apart. This can from the 5am run club, to the 2km walk with the other parents who know how mad you are and how you need that walk, to the child at school who starts to lose interest in what is important for their wellbeing. I think that as soon as we start feeling down and out we lose motivation and that tends to work against our ability to process and build resilience. It’s a slippery slope. Hence the video and photo I used for this post. I was very reluctant to go down that slide, I hate cold water. But once I got over the apprehension and committed to the ride (I guess similar to the ride of life) I finished elated, with my arms in the air..”
The reality is the look of horror on my face was probably what enticed the scroller to take another look. As we lean into the unknown, there is a part of us that wants to move forward and a part that fears it. By acknowledging and befriending our protective side, we can learn to overcome our fears and embrace growth even when we are terrified.
I wanted to elaborate on what I wrote and why I feel sport is so important especially in those moments when we feel so lost and possibly alone. I believe that it’s in the power of community and shared experiences. When life feels overwhelming, it’s often the connections we have that can provide the most comfort and support. This can be found in various forms, from the camaraderie of a running club to the support in a team.
- The 5am Run Club: The early morning ritual of running with like-minded individuals can create a sense of community and shared purpose. The physical exertion can also be a powerful way to clear your mind and focus on the present moment.
- The 2km Walk: Even a short walk with other humans or pets can provide a much-needed break from the daily grind. Sharing experiences and offering support can help alleviate feelings of isolation and stress.
- Supporting Children: When children face difficulties, they might struggle to identify what’s troubling them. This can result in them pulling away from important activities, like team sports. It’s beneficial to encourage your children to participate and connect with others on (and off) the sports field.
Here are some strategies to help you navigate the year ahead:
1. Commit to Showing Up, Even When It’s the Last Thing You Want
Resisting the urge to skip a workout when you’re not in the mood is tough, but staying consistent is crucial. Remember, even a brief run or walk can have an impact.
– Begin with Small Steps: Segment your workouts into smaller, more achievable parts.
– Seek Companionship: Jogging with a friend can make the time pass quicker and offer encouragement.
– Vary Your Routine: Keep your exercise fresh by trying different paths or routines.
– Acknowledge Every Achievement: Each step forward is a triumph in itself.
2. Adopting the Runner’s Mindset for Enhanced Decision-Making
The discipline of running imparts lessons that are transferable to various facets of life.
– Setting Goals: Establishing precise running targets reflects the process of goal-setting in other domains.
– Facing Challenges: Similar to confronting a steep incline, life throws obstacles our way. Enduring through them fosters toughness.
– Conscious Concentration: Running demands focus, akin to the attention needed for critical decision-making.
– Patient Rewards: The satisfaction of crossing the finish line parallels the fulfillment of reaching long-term aspirations.
Final Thoughts
Finding motivation can be challenging, but your progress suggests a part of you yearns for transformation. Embrace that yearning, nurture your drive, and have faith in your capacity to surmount hurdles.
You’re in good company. By dedicating yourself to your sport, you’re nurturing both your mental and physical health. Together, let’s set a steady rhythm and conclude this year on a high note!
Drawing from my life lessons, the best advice I can offer is to hold on to hope, avoid despair, and simply lace up those sneakers/takkies to run (or walk) towards a better life.
