Running Together, Growing Together

“Encouragement breeds hope, which leads to a willingness to change, which leads
to courageous action, which leads to growth that can be miraculous to witness.”

As runners, we’re often solitary creatures, pounding the pavement or trails alone
with our thoughts. But it’s the camaraderie and support we find in our communities
that truly fuel our passion. Just like a strong pace line can propel us to new heights,
the encouragement of our fellow runners can lift us over mental hurdles and push us
to our limits.

Consider this: when discouragement or self-doubt creeps in, a supportive word from
a friend can ignite the determination to persevere. It might be a high-five at a race’s
start, a friend journeying thousands of kilometers to pace you for 50 miles for a
catch-up, or even a stranger dousing you with cool water or ice when you feel on the
brink of giving up. Such small gestures of kindness can significantly influence our
motivation and well-being.

I feel as though the communities in which we find ourselves are often like that
of those running a relay. Each runner hands off the baton to the next, passing on
their energy, their determination, and their support. Like a reliable pace-setter, our
communities offer consistent support, helping us navigate challenges and achieve
our goals. Whether it’s providing a listening ear, assisting with tasks, or simply being
present, our communities are a source of strength.

I will always remember the struggle to complete the Tankwa crossing—a grueling
207km desert run in 46-degree Celsius heat. With only 20km left and in second
place, not only was I on track to set a female record on foot, but I was also battling
overwhelming fatigue. My legs were failing, I was vomiting, and self-doubt was
rampant. At my lowest point, Amri Williamson, who would become one of my dearest
friends, joined me. Her cheers and encouragement were pivotal. Bolstered by her
presence, I mustered the will to overcome the agony and cross the finish line. One
instance of someone’s strength boosting my own is a testament to the power of
human connection. I’ve also had the privilege of offering encouragement to others.
Witnessing their joy and gratitude is incredibly rewarding, a reminder of the positive
impact we can have on each other’s lives.

Here are some tips on running and support that I’ve found useful:

Actively listen: Give your full attention to others when they speak and provide sincere
support. Solutions aren’t always necessary; sometimes, just listening is enough for someone
to feel acknowledged and validated in their experiences.

Provide support: A kind word, a helping hand, or just being present can significantly
impact someone’s life. Even small gestures, such as offering advice on your son’s
tech project, can be meaningful.

Set an example: Discuss your own challenges and the ways you’ve overcome them.
Being a positive role model can encourage others to follow suit. Never be
embarrassed to admit that you are who you are thanks to the influence of others.

Let’s use social media to spread kindness and inspiration. Share your own stories of
support and encouragement. By sharing our experiences, we can inspire others and
foster stronger community bonds. Let’s continue to run (literally and figuratively)
together, supporting and encouraging each other every step of the way. Together,
we can create a more positive and supportive community.
